Radicova: Slovakia Run by Smer's Co-owners

Bratislava, May 19 (TASR) - Proof that Slovakia is governed by the co-owners of the Smer-SD party is emerging, said SDKU-DS election leader Iveta Radicova at a press conference in Bratislava on Wednesday.

"Based on grave suspicions and published evidence, Premier Robert Fico has lost his mandate," she added.

"I think it's becoming more and more clear that the attack on our political party (focusing on its finances) in January was a prepared, clearly pre-emptive blow," said SDKU chairman Mikulas Dzurinda, adding that based on the published information, Premier and Smer chairman Fico should do the decent thing and resign.

"It's about strength and personality. This goes far beyond the borders of a mistake. These are grave suspicions, evidence," added Radicova. She thinks that the leaders of Smer and Fico himself should now answer the questions that have arisen.

In an interview published by SME daily on Wednesday, entrepreneur and former Smer-SD party MP Bohumil Hanzel said that he arranged meetings between Fico and Smer's sponsors, who sank tens of millions of crowns into the party. In addition, Hanzel claimed that he can provide proof that in late 1999 he and Fico agreed to seek out influential people willing to bankroll the party. He claimed to have arranged separate meetings for Fico with five major bankers and five entrepreneurs.

Hanzel also reaffirmed his recent statements that Smer's election campaign in 2002 cost Sk284 million (€9.4 million), far more than the officially announced figure.
